Don’t Go Without These 4 Nursing Certifications

Though most of what makes you valuable as a nurse is the experience you’ve gained on the job, those who want to take their career to the next level should consider specialized training. Extra certifications aren’t just for those who want to advance their career, however. In fact, higher education is linked to better care and improved patient safety. Whether you’re looking to spice up your resume, get a better job or simply improve your skills as a nurse, these four nursing certifications should be considered mandatory.

Essential nursing certifications

1. Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)

Though some RNs think ACLS training is best for those in critical and emergency care units, the truth is all of us participate in a code at some point. Do you want to be an asset to your team at these critical moments? Sadly, basic CPR training doesn’t remotely prepare you for an in-hospital code blue, and ACLS certification is the bare minimum to be productive in these situations. Not only will this training make you more qualified in every setting, it will also teach you to keep a cool head in tense situations.

2. Pediatric advanced life support (PALS)

Though the material covered in PALS training is similar in theory to that covered by ACLS, pediatric emergencies are much more complex than caring for adult patients. Due to individualized treatment algorithms and tighter dosage margins, PALS certification is among the most difficult to obtain, but it will give you a unique and valuable skill set that will make you more desirable to employers.

3. Critical care registered nurse (CCRN)

Earning CCRN certification is a difficult but intensely rewarding process. When mastering the care of critically ill patients, you will gain in-depth knowledge of the management of severe injury and advanced disease processes. While the training is especially vital for those who intend to work in an ICU or other advanced setting, the knowledge is valuable for nurses working at all levels of care.

4. Trauma nursing core course (TNCC)

As a final step in honing your ability to assess, treat and manage patients who are experiencing an acute emergency, TNCC certification proves to employers you are dedicated to your field and are at the leading edge of your peers. This two-day course immerses you in the knowledge you need to provide the best patient care possible.
